Strengths, Functioning and Support Needs

Understanding Autism Across the Lifespan

The aim of this research project is to validate the new ICF Core Set for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using existing Autism CRC datasets, then co‐design a prototype assessment tool that evaluates strengths, functioning and support needs for individuals undergoing an autism‐related assessment of functioning process. This will be achieved across two research phases (Figure 1). Phase 1 focusses on developing a comprehensive understanding of strengths, functioning and support needs within autistic populations across the lifespan, and using these findings to validate the ICF Core Set for ASD. Current assessment tools that measure strengths, functioning and support needs will be critiqued in relation to psychometric properties and acceptability. These activities will involve review by autistic researchers. Phase 2 operationalises findings of Phase 1 to co‐design a prototype ‘assessment of functioning’ tool, with substantial input from autistic researchers, caregivers, end‐user organisations, clinicians and researchers.
